British Airways’ new cabin safety video plays like an episode of ‘Bridgerton’

The “Bridgerton” craze has officially spread its tentacles to all aspects of daily life, including air travel. A new cabin safety briefing film for British Airways, created by Uncommon Creative Studio, takes place in the 19th century. Directed by Sharon Maguire, best known for her work on “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” the five-minute film titled “Plane Eyre” (a play on Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 novel Jane Eyre) features lords and ladies of the manor, housekeepers, butlers and more as they go about their day-to-day lives in period Britain. The unsuspecting socialites engage in their typical activities such as salons, horseback riding and more before being abruptly interrupted by modern-day British Airways crew members, who introduce them to modern technology as they demonstrate cabin rules such as turning off and storing electronic devices before take-off. The bewildered characters question what exactly a plane is, to which a crew member responds, “That’s a British Airways A350.” Also read: British Airways’ strikingly simple outdoor ads show people looking out of plane windows The film was shot in grand country houses across the U.K. and was inspired by Britain’s history made famous through its literature, TV and film. The campaign smartly takes a different approach to what are now routine and often boring safety videos, which are sometimes ignored by frequent flyers. (Other carriers, notably Delta and Air New Zealand, have also gotten creative with safety videos over the years.) To create the film, British Airways tapped more than 40 British Airways employees. According to a press release, the airline plans to refresh its films regularly to keep customers engaged in the safety messages being delivered. The film will be featured on board British Airways’ long-haul flights from Aug. 1.
