Car rental firm Enterprise mines comedy gold from its brand name in this "Star-Trek" themed spot, which throws in about as many references to the show as it's possible to do.
Tying in with the summer release of the new movie "Star Trek Beyond," the ad blends the world of the starship Enterprise with that of Enterprise Rent-A-Car employees. They speak Klingon in meetings, knowingly discuss the pitfalls of renting to Vulcans and Romulans, and hand over keys to gigantic spaceships in hte parking lot.
Director Matt Pittroff at Twist worked with a group of improvisation actors on the spot, by agency Cannonball.
Outside of the great performances, the film's creators had to take special measures to make sure details were in line with the show's canon. "We knew that it would be looked at under a microscope by both Paramount and an entire subculture of Trekkies," Mr. Pittroff said.
But fortunately, given the passion of "Star Trek" fans, a lot of resources were readily available.
"In actuality our research was done almost entirely on YouTube," said Mr. Pittroff. "You'd be amazed at how many Klingon tutorials exist. Sure, you have to weed through, but once you get down to brass tacks, there's a ton of valuable otherworldly information. We also knew the studio would call us out if we screwed it up. So far, all of the feedback is Kaj-ma!"
"Star Trek Beyond," from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot, is now in theaters.
