Andreas Nilsson : The Church of Pancakes
Aliens and hotcakes! Mmmmm. . .

Editor's Pick
Earlier this month, Swedish artist/filmmaker Andreas Nilsson brought aliens and hotcakes to the Soho House West Hollywood for his installation The Church of Pancakes, in collaboration with creative studio/community Flux and Furlined, which reps Nilsson for spots and music videos.
According to Nilsson, "The Church of Pancakes is based around a rather famous UFO incident in Wisconsin in 1961 where a spaceship landed and gave a chicken farmer called Joe Simonton four pancakes." He partnered with friends Bo Melin, Mattias Karlsson and Daniel Jensen to create a "a quasi sect called Scrollen," which sought to bring Simonton's story to the people and "celebrate him as a saint." Nilsson says, "We elevated the guy into absurdity."
Nilsson previously exhibited The Church in 2000 in Stockholm at the Moderna Museet and at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo. For the Flux Series, he developed the idea further, adding "more mythological elements, a couple of characters that [were] so powerful I had to keep them caged." The characters performed an "anthem" in collaboration with Hans Appelqvist and a Chris DeBurgh song about "extraterrestrial matters."
The Church of Pancakes was the inaugural event in Flux's ongoing Artist Series at Soho House. Curated by Meg and Jonathan Wells, the series consists of intimate salons showcasing top creative talents from film, art, design and music.
