Doritos’ latest LGBTQ+ story is a touching road-trip tale of love and adversity

Slap Global continues the #PrideAllYear campaign with ‘Bold Love,’ starring a real-life couple

Doritos México has been running a campaign for the past year called #OrgulloTodoElAño, or #PrideAllYear, to give visibility to the LGBTQ+ community beyond Pride month. The latest spot, breaking this week—beautifully produced and well acted—tells one couple’s story of love against all odds.

“Bold Love” is a reminder that LGBTQ+ people still face significant social, ideological and cultural barriers to loving the person they want. This new film, built around a couple’s simple conversation on a car trip, highlights just what they stand to lose when they pursue the life they deserve.

The spot was created by Slap Global. The agency’s co-founder and co-CCO, Maxi Itzkoff, told Ad Age that the pre-production process took two months, as they wanted to cast real couples who were also strong actors. They wanted the film to be very intimate, so they shot on a country road in Mexico during the night from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for two days.

“The insight is based on this well know cliché about love: I’ll bring down the moon and the starts for you,” Itzkoff said. “But then the twist comes when she says, ‘What would you really do?’ The things the women talk about sound kind of normal, except for the consequences those actions could bring.”
 
The DP was Galo Olivares, who shot the movie Roma. The director was Felix Fernandez de Castro.

“Bold Love” is the fifth installment of the series, which began in 2021 with “The Best Gift.” That was followed by films made for Mother's Day, Day of the Dead, and Father's Day.
