Families learn more about their traditions and business origins in Ancestry ads

‘It’s a Family Thing’ features real families discovering something new about their entrepreneurial and traditional history

Ancestry is more than a platform for DNA tests and finding long-lost family members. It can also be a platform to piece together the story of an interesting family tradition or the origins of the family business, according to a new campaign from creative production agency Avocados & Coconuts.

Titled “It’s a Family Thing,” Ancestry’s latest campaign includes four spots featuring real families using the platform to discover and connect their family stories—from putting together the origin story of a 130-year-old family hat store business (above) to learning about a family tradition of glass blowing and more. 


The ads were filmed documentary-style, as each family learns something new about their history. Essential to the campaign was casting, as Ancestry and the Avocados team partnered with casting agencies to find four families that represented the campaign theme of shared traits, hobbies and businesses but also the diversity of Ancestry’s client base. 


The spots are running on broadcast, digital and social media platforms.
