Google Chrome and Colombian star Maluma team up for F1 song and music video

Colombian music artist and global superstar Maluma is bringing Formula 1 racing to fans who can’t make it in real life through an original song and music video created in partnership with Google Chrome. “Cruise with Chrome,” a campaign created by The Martin Agency, features an original song from Maluma—who is an F1 fan—titled “Pit Stop” which uses the sounds of a McLaren F1 team racecar as part of the beat production. A music video, directed by French visual artist Quentin Deronzier, known for working with artists like Drake, The Weeknd and Doja Cat, depicts a stand-in for the artist called “Luis” taking his place on set for the video shoot before he returns to Maluma’s residence, where he is making music. The video, launched Thursday (May 2) ahead of race weekend in Miami, was inspired by true events, as the artist was unable to make Google Chrome’s “Pit Stop” shoot in Miami due to the birth of his daughter. “I’m a big F1 fan, and Miami is such a special part of my life and music, so when Chrome approached me to collaborate on a song and video for race weekend in Miami using the sound of the McLaren F1 team engine, I had to say yes!” said Maluma in a statement. The video also features Google Chrome products including Google Lens in Chrome, Calendar Overlay and Generative AI themes, as Luis learns how to walk, talk and act like Maluma. Viewers can interact with the music video for an opportunity to win prizes such as race tickets by finding clues in the film and answering trivia questions. “Our goal with this project was to showcase the best of Chrome browser's innovative and differentiated features through an interactive music video experience that blends tech, music and sports during an important moment in Miami as well as the cultural zeitgeist,” said Jackie Titus, director of global consumer marketing, activation and engagement at Google. In addition, music video cutdowns, stills and additional behind-the-scenes snippets will run across organic and paid channels including TikTok and YouTube, as well as digital platforms Spotify and Genius. The campaign will run across digital and social through June 25. The campaign comes after Google became an official partner of the McLaren F1 team in 2022, integrating its technology across F1 operations. For instance, McLaren’s team exclusively uses the Chrome browser and Android devices. Meanwhile, in 2023, Google Chrome ran the Speed Challenge campaign, featuring McLaren F1 team driver Lando Norris and rap artists Busta Rhymes and Lil Yachty, as the artists performed original lyrics about speed and Google Chrome that matched the pace of Lando’s quickest lap ever—1:14.693 mph, set at the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix (a tempo of 220 beats per minute).
