Google revisits 25 years of search in annual year-end campaign
In-house effort identifies the ‘most searched’ people, trends and innovations across a quarter-century
Editor's Pick
Google always creates a flashy year-end video looking back at search trends to frame what people were most interested in all year long. For 2023, though, they’ve blown it out into a hybrid creation—looking partly at the past year, but also revisiting the “most searched” moments, people, topics, events and places of the past 25 years to celebrate Google’s 25th birthday.
Google Trends data first became available globally in 2004, so it doesn’t stretch all the way back in Google’s founding in 1998. Still, the video below captures a ton of history—nicely profiling many “most searched” people and things.
Google made a point of note, however, that the campaign is hardly exhaustive of every person, movement, or moment that fit the criteria of “most searched.”
The campaign, crafted by Google’s Brand Studio, includes lots of other ancillary content.
A “Where’s Waldo” style Google Doodle, called the “Most Searched Playground Doodle,” features an interactive search-and-find Doodle experience. Short-form “tribute” videos to icons and fandoms are rolling out across YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram Reels. There will also be interactive fan polls on Instagram Stories and X.
Taylor Swift and Christiano Ronaldo are also on board as influencers for the campaign.
