It's that time of year again when sunny destinations try to lure those in more northerly climes with clever stunts.

In previous winters we've seen Fort Lauderdale tempt New Yorkers with a heated bus shelter and now Palm Springs is at it too. The Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau teamed up with JetBlue to promote the airline's new flights to Palm Springs, by setting New Yorkers the "ice block challenge."

The stunt saw two six foot ice blocks dropped in Washington Square Park and Flatiron Plaza, filled with prizes such as golf clubs, sandals, pool attire and party speakers, as well as a "golden ticket" -- a round-trip airfare and accommodation for two in Palm Springs. Those who managed to break the ice would win the prizes -- and people could also take part on Twitter by tweeting the Palm Spring oasis (@thegpsoasis) with what they'd ideally do there.

The campaign is the first for GPSCVB, the tourism board for Greater Palm Springs and was created by its social media agency Ignited.
