Ikea Canada is reairing this 2004 ad, which still resonates today

Few commercials from 2004 would play well today, outside of pure nostalgia/entertainment value. But here’s one that does—a spot for Ikea Canada that’s just as relevant as it ever was. The brand is putting the spot back in rotation for a limited time, with just one small tweak. Instead of advertising a winter sale, the new version (now airing on TV through Aug. 11, and arriving online Aug. 5) promotes the chain’s general affordability at a time of inflation and high prices. They just played the Ikea "Start the car" ad on CBC during the Olympics. The exact same one that was shot, what, 20 years ago? Start the car!!! Official titled “It’s Not a Mistake,” but better known as “Start the Car!”—which the shopper screams repeatedly upon fleeing the Ikea store—the commercial was originally developed by agency Zig and directed by Mark Gilbert. “Start the car!” has even become synonymous for getting a great deal. “As we continue to make bold moves to lower prices and pass savings along to Canadians, we thought a reprisal of this iconic creative would be a clever way to reinforce our commitment to affordability and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the campaign,” said Jonelle Ricketts, head of marketing at Ikea Canada. “We hope the many Canadians enjoy the commercial’s revival and come visit us to discover all the incredible savings both in-store and online.” More Creativity coverage from Ad Age: Sign up for our daily Creativity newsletter to see the best stories of the day.
