Barely 24 hours after the unveiling of the John Lewis and Waitrose Christmas commercial, the parodies of "Excitable Edgar" have started.
One of the first is from PoliticsJoe, the political channel of a comedy website that, back in 2016, hilariously spoofed the John Lewis ad "Buster the Boxer." Its new send-up has "Dangerous Donald" Trump as the spot's fire-breathing dragon, with a censorious Greta Thunberg as the little girl trying to keep him in check.
First, Donald melts the snowman being built by Barack and Michelle Obama. He goes on to eviscerate the ice rink, aka the Greenland ice sheet, leaving Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren drowning in the pond. Then, he scorches Obama's Clean Power Plan to bits. The piece de resistance is when he sets fire to the Paris climate agreement, subbed in for the original ad's Christmas pudding.
It all ends with Trump remarking, "I think I know more about the environment than most people" and the tagline "Show them how little you care."
Another parody, by The Poke, features the ad with an alternative ending—a "Game of Thrones"-style scorched earth dragon scenario.
Meanwhile, brands including Aldi, Marks & Spencer and Burger King have all been paying tribute to/trolling the John Lewis ad on Twitter.
Let the games begin.
