Nostalgia seems to be winning out this Christmas. After aping "Top Gun" in its teaser, Aldi's holiday mascot Kevin the Carrot is now paying homage to another '80s classic, "ET," in its full-length seasonal spot.
In the ad we see the plucky root vegetable struggling to make his way home to his kids after ejecting from his fighter jet in the previous spot. As he makes his way through the snow, he awakens a hibernating hedgehog who helps on his adventures. The pair fall into a perilous ravine and into a fast flowing river, but then Santa arrives to save the day. (He happens to be played by actor Jim Broadbent, narrator of the previous Kevin ads as well as this one).
After wrapping Kevin in a blanket, Santa decides to deliver Kevin home on a child's bike (we're not quite sure why he didn't take the sleigh) and as luck would have it, there's a full moon, allowing us to remember the classic Spielberg movie scene. In perhaps the only nod to the pandemic, the ad ends with a message about having "Christmas together with all you hold dear," as well as a message thanking all key workers.
Once again, the ad is by McCann and animated by Psyop duo Todd Mueller and Kylie Matulick. It breaks tonight on British TV during soap opera "Coronation Street."
"Kevin’s popularity keeps on growing and this year, more so than any other, Kevin’s return to TV screens will come as a welcome relief for so many,” said Aldi UK Marketing Director Sean McGinty in a statement.
