A man’s hands stage a revolt in wonderfully weird Hornbach spot
The German DIY chain and agency HeimatTBWA\ deliver another winner with director Steve Rogers
Editor's Pick
Hands with a mind of their own are a popular trope in horror movies, as in this classic scene from “The Evil Dead.” Now, German DIY retailer Hornbach offers its own take on rogue appendages in a spot encouraging homeowners to put down the smartphone and get a little handy themselves.
We won’t spoil the ad above, other than to say the physical comedy is brilliant and the payoff is really satisfying. The spot was made by agency HeimatTBWA\ and directed by Steve Rogers—the same pair that created “The Square Meter,” which won the Film Craft Grand Prix at Cannes Lions back in June. (Hornbach and Heimat also just have a long history of doing brilliant creative work together.)
It’s also a really fresh take on engaging with the real world, rather than getting lost in the virtual one—a common refrain from marketers these days, but not usually delivered as entertainingly as this.

“Hands and will are probably the most valuable and magical creative tools at your disposal. However, they are also ones that DIY enthusiasts have to bring to the project themselves,” said Thomas Schnaitmann, head of international brand at Hornbach. “Wven the Hornbach range doesn’t have that for once.”
The spot was produced by Tony Petersen Film. Katalyst in Berlin handled the visual effects, with music by Machine in New York.
