For individuals with Parkinson’s disease, daily life is riddled with challenges related to movement, such as tremors, slowness and difficulty with walking or balance. Often unseen, however, are mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, brought on at times due to the physical changes patients face.

Mood and movement are connected, which is why Dr. Christian Lambert from the University College London Queen Square Institute of Neurology launched a campaign to educate people about that fact through music.

Created by agency Innocean Berlin in partnership with Grammy nominee, composer and producer Lucas Mayer from audio production company DaHouse, “Tremors vs. Tremors” shows, in a documentary-style short film, how physical tremors from five people with Parkinson’s disease are recorded to make unique music tracks.

Using accelerometers, Dr. Lambert records each person’s tremors and shares the data with Mayer. From there, DaHouse audio producer Wonder Bettin translates the findings into one-dimensional sound waves to create music using the tremors as the foundation. The film reveals the songs to the patients at the end, capturing their reactions, all of which were positive and emotional.

“I feel a physical change in my symptoms when I have an emotional reaction to things. And, there's nothing more emotional than music that's based on me,” one participant, Kuhan, said. His song is called “The Greatest Day."

Another participant, Clare, whose song “Starlight Keeper” is about acceptance said, "It made me consciously let go of my hands, instead of holding my hands to stop my tremor.”

The campaign aims to capture both the seen and unseen symptoms of Parkinson’s, which can often be so variable. It launched on Monday in time for Brain Awareness Week (March 11-17).

As part of the campaign, each person’s song has been published to Spotify, where others can listen to the songs and share. In addition, Innocean has created limited edition vinyls of the tracks.
