Pet food brand puts statues of First Dogs Bo Obama and Fido Lincoln on the National Mall

Why do presidents get all the press on Presidents Day? This year, natural dog food brand Jinx is celebrating the nation’s Companions-in-Chief by putting statues of famous First Pups in the same place they held power—Washington D.C. Today, February 21, Jinx unveils three life-size statues of the United States' canine greats, created by in-house sculptors at Jinx. On display are Abraham Lincoln’s Fido, a nervous yellow mutt who couldn't handle the noise of D.C. and was left to live in Lincoln's family home in Illinois; Jackie O’s Pushinka, a mixed-breed gift from the Soviet premier and the pup of one of the first dogs to visit outer space; and Barack Obama’s Bo, a Portuguese Water Dog whose hypoallergenic fur was necessary due to Malia Obama's allergies. The statues will be on view during President’s Day on the National Mall, as mapped out by an illustration by local artist Madelyn Adams. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve realized how much we depend on our pets for emotional support," said Jinx Co-Founder Sameer Mehta in a statement. "At Jinx, we all turn to our dogs to get through tough days and we thought if that was true for us, imagine the pressure of being the President of the United States. That’s why this President’s Day, we put politics aside to celebrate our Companions-in-Chief, the dogs that have been there for some of our nation’s greatest leaders, ready and waiting for belly rubs and daily walks.” The statues will be unveiled at the Lincoln Memorial today before moving to an as-of-yet undisclosed permanent home tomorrow.
