This quirky skincare ad depicts the perils of a 'dull' face

A new spot for Unilever's Pond's Men brand puts an entertaining spin on having a "dull" face (and also boasts one of the most unusual uses of Simple Minds' biggest hit, "Don't You Forget About Me," that we've seen in an ad.) Created via Ogilvy Singapore and running in Indonesia and Myanmar, the quirky TV spot centers on a young man whose skin is dull that he's practiaclly invisible. He can't hail a bus, or get noticed by a girl (including on online dating apps), he's ignored by his teacher in class and even gets run over a car that doesn't see him. When he ends up in a hospital bed, the nurse puts a coffee cup on his shoulder. As these events unfold, he mournfully sings the Simple Minds track (famously used in "The Breakfast Club.") But that all changes when he sees another guy using Pond's Bright Boost scrub, and suddenly they're singing the chorus happily together. Diego Nuñez Irigoyen directed the work, via Stink Films. It's not the first funny work we've seen from Pond's for the Asian market; last year's "Love at First Sight," by David Madrid, put a hilarious product-related spin onto a sappy love story. Pond's has in fact been trying to trying to make men's face wash more funny, entertaining and relatable for the past four years, says Ogilvy creative director Guilherme Carmagos -- an approach that has driven brand growth.
