With the advent of the iPod, iPhone, Zune and every other portable player under the sun, one would never think people would hear the word "Walkman" again. But the folks at Sony, along with production powers at NON-GRID in Japan and agency GT Tokyo/Denstu, have different ideas, and, to highlight the new Walkman, which can record TV, they've created a slick online home for thousands of fans.
The "Rec You" site lets you generate a single portrait of your likeness in seconds, which is animated using Motion Portrait technology to bob and wear a Walkman. You join a tiled wall of compatriots that have done the same, resulting in a chorus of headphone-wearing, Walkman-rocking fans.
A mesmerizing grid of bobbing heads greets visitors, revolving and evolving into an infinite tunnel of Walkman wearers just by scrolling the mouse. First-timers should start at the "S," follow the visual instructions, shoot the correct kind of photo, agree to the privacy disclaimer and upload your mug.
