Adult Swim debuts new branded film starring Morty as a football hero

Adult Swim's “Rick and Morty” has added Adidas to its lineup of brand partners in a fun new animated ad depicting the show’s title character Morty as a fleet-footed soccer pro to promote the brand’s new X Speedportal boots. 

The film opens with the show’s titular mad scientist Rick Sanchez storming into his nephew's room to tell him he's about to become a football star. He then ushers the boy into his lab, where we find pro players Mo Salah and Vivianne Miedema suspended in vats of liquid, their talents being funneled into a pair of the new Adidas kicks.

Sanchez then sends Morty into another dimension, where alongside Salah and Miedema, he faces off on the pitch with amphibious foes, fueled by his neon green X Speedportal shoes. 

The co-branded ad is meant to highlight the speed offered by the new kicks across multiple dimensions. 

“With X Speedportal, we listened to what some of the fastest players on the planet wanted from their boots,” said Franziska Aurnhammer, senior product manager at Adidas, in a statement. “It was clear that the mental element of speed was just as important as the physical, which is why it was so important to create a boot that not only supports explosive movement, but also allows players to enter a flow state where movement is fast and autonomous. The result is a boot that unlocks multidimensional speed for the fastest players on the planet.”

According to an Adult Swim spokesperson, the spot marks the first time “Rick and Morty” is partnering with Adidas. The 90-second film will be running on the Adult Swim YouTube channel, with cutdowns airing across Adidas and “Rick and Morty” social channels. It’s just the latest of the many entertaining brand partnerships we’ve seen with the popular show, which previously has partnered with Wendy’s, Sony Playstation, Wrangler and more. 

 “It’s a collaboration that could only happen in a multiverse, and Rick, Morty, Mo Salah and Vivianne Miedema are the (fever) dream team you never knew you needed to see,” added Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim.
