A new cinematic short film from Brazilian ad agency Africa Creative and publisher Editora Taverna takes aim at the ongoing practice of conversion therapy of the LGBTQIA+ community by presenting a dramatized version of historical methods used—and how it’s still being practiced today.

Titled “The Cure,” the film explores violent practices of the 1930s and 1940s to “correct” non-heterosexual orientations—shock therapy, sexual retraining and more. The film juxtaposes those acts with modern-day therapy sessions, in which doctors still challenge homosexual behaviors.

The film, directed by Rafa Damy and Nicole Cruvinel through production company Santeria, is launched as a bill before the Brazilian National Congress seeks to criminalize conversion therapy. It was also inspired by the investigative work of journalist Marcos Sergio Silva as well as Jean Ícaro’s book “Gay Cure: There Is No Cure for What Is Not a Disease.”

The campaign film is a raw, unfiltered representation of the abusive nature of conversion therapy, which causes a great deal of trauma to both members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their families. It shows how what was once physical trauma is now emotional and mental trauma—yet it’s trauma just the same.
