Music moves people, in every sense of the word. And that power is powerfully and artfully illustrated in SiriusXM’s new commercial, titled “A Life in Sound.”

Kim Gehrig directed the three-minute film, which was created by agency Uncommon. A shorter version will air nationally during the Oscars on ABC this weekend. It starts out with a young Black girl dancing in a mostly empty loft space to Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red.”

But there are many chapters to her story, which we see as the film unfolds.

The spot is part of a national multi-platform brand campaign about how SiriusXM brings listeners closer to what moves them. The work follows a refreshed brand identity last fall.

The short film skillfully veers from one vibe to the next, and also travels through time, as our protagonist gravitates to different music and interviews on SiriusXM. There are snippets of Nikki and Brie Garcia, Conan O’Brien, John Mayer, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo and Jose Mangin—as well as the songs below, in addition to Doja.

• Sepultura, “Roots Bloody Roots”
• Benny Page ft. Doktor, “Trenches”
• Carl Cox ft. Reinier Zonneveld & Chris Coe, “Inferno”
• Bat for Lashes, “Laura”
• Soul II Soul, “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)"
• Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, “Bright Horses”

“‘A Life in Sound’ celebrates the real, universal, and uniquely human experience of being moved by the audio you love,” said Nils Leonard, co-founder at Uncommon Creative Studio. “One film. One woman. Dancing through the different chapters of her life. It is the truth of the SiriusXM experience captured in film. And as a creative studio, we were honored to have the opportunity to capture and share that magic.”

There are out-of-home ads that are also pretty striking. They visually portray listeners getting closer to music and sports. The ads were shot by photographer and filmmaker Gabriel Moses.

Digital OOH ads even bring the crowds to life in slow motion. The OOH work is rolling out in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Boston and Atlanta.

“At SiriusXM we are passionate about audio. Our ‘Closer’ campaign features powerful, emotive and iconic creative showcasing the role that SiriusXM plays in people’s lives and is a celebration of the power of audio,” said Suzi Watford, chief growth officer at SiriusXM. “As we look to connect with the next generation of SiriusXM listeners, we’re focused on telling stories of how we bring listeners and fans closer to what moves them.”
