Squarepusher's VR Music Video Lets You Explore a Psychedelic Universe in 3D

This psychedelic music video from U.K. electronic musician Squarepusher is designed specifically for viewing via Virtual Reality - and it's also a comment on a VR future.

Squarepusher (a.k.a. Tom Jenkinson) worked with interactive design studio Marshmallow Laser Feast, animation studio Blue Zoo and illustrator Rob Pybus on the design for the video. The video, set to the track "Stor Eiglass," paints the surreal story of a headless woman navigating a brighly colored but dystopian landscape, peopled by folks wearing VR headsets.

Viewing the video via YouTube's 360 video platform, using Google Chrome, affords a 360-degree view, and you can scroll around to change the perspective of the film. To get the full 3D effect, however, you'll need to watch it in VR using Google Cardboard or Samsung's Gear VR. The VR video will also be screened with headsets at a number of events worldwide, starting today (May 15) with Tokyo Garden Hall and Sydney Opera House from May 22-31.

Marshmallow Laser Feast's creative director, Robin McNicholas, said in a statement: "We mimicked the track's theme of twisting a genre to become the antidote of everything it stands for by using VR to frivolously highlight the possible perils of VR addiction."

Meanwhile, Blue Zoo's co-founder, Tom Box, commented: "Recent leaps in VR technology mean for the first time we can now develop experiences which are instantly accessible by a mass audience."
