A year ago this week, Argentina’s national football team added a third star to its jersey with its historic World Cup victory in Qatar. Now, a sports network in the country celebrates the anniversary with a fun film dramatizing a coastal hotel’s efforts to similarly upgrade from two stars to three.

The six-minute film below, for TyC Sports, was created by FutLove, the football-focused division of agency Mercado McCann. It tells the story of Hotel La Argentina in San Bernardo, a humble hotel that harbors the same dream as the national team—to gain that the third star.

What makes the film work is the understated humor, as the hotel’s owner—who is approached with the idea, rather than coming up with it himself—seems bemused throughout about the project.

The charming bit of branded content aired on TyC Sports and also became a hit in social media.

“We wanted to do something different,” the agency told Ad Age. “That’s why we decided not to show any scene from any match, but to tell a warm story about perseverance, family, pride and the satisfying joy of fulfilling your dreams. After all, that’s what the FIFA World Cup is all about.”

The film features all real employees from the hotel, except for one—the owner is played by an actor. (The real owner, who preferred not to act, is still featured in the film—he’s the man on the ladder who adds the third star to the hotel’s facade.)

Also, the film takes some poetic license. It would take more structural upgrades, not just cosmetic changes, to actually bring the hotel up to three stars. For now, it officially remains a two-star hotel—but the dream lives on.
