Pen-maker Bic has launched a digital project in which it's crowdsourcing digital handwriting contributions from around the world to combine them into a single "Universal Typeface." The experiment, which promotes the brand's Cristal ballpoint, was developed by DDB Tribal Düsseldorf and produced by digital production company MediaMonks. Participants can submit their handwriting using Mobile Connect technology on their smartphone or tablet touchscreen. They can also explore statistical differences and similarities between their own contribution and the average contribution of different demographics, grouped according to age, gender, industry of employment and other characteristics. MediaMonks developed a unique algorithm that will merge all the input and aggregate the results into the "Universal Typeface", which will be downloadable as a font from August.
