In the ad, Santa and his elves are baffled by requests from New Zealanders such as a "puggy bank," a book of "magic trucks" and a "earplane." One little boy even asks for what sounds like a "new beard." The elves start assembling said items, until a furious Scottish-accented elf intervenes. Then, it's down to the cabin crew from Air NZ to explain the real meaning of the Christmas requests.
As part of the campaign, by Host/Havas, some of the mistaken toys that the Santa elves made will be given away by the airline on social media throughout December.
Air New Zealand Chief Marketing and Customer Officer Mike Tod says in a statement: "While it's no secret the Kiwi accent has been misunderstood at times, it's also a signature part of our service. In fact, for many Kiwis, being welcomed onboard an Air New Zealand flight by crew after being offshore for some time makes them feel instantly back at home. We wanted to celebrate the festive season and the Kiwi accent in a humorous and uniquely Air New Zealand way."
