Mountain Dew is bringing zombies to your living room, office and grocery store.
The Pepsi-owned beverage brand is partnering in a multi-million dollar deal with AMC's "The Walking Dead" for its eighth season with an augmented reality app that will put zombie walkers in real-world environments.
"The Walking Dead" continues to be the most popular scripted show on TV, making it attractive for advertisers who are still looking for places with big audiences, an increasing rarity in today's TV ecosystem.
Still, the AMC jauggernaut is showing some signs of decay. In its seventh season, the series posted a 19% decline in its commercial rating the three days after the shows airs, an industry standard known as C3. "The Walking Dead" pulled a 5.1 rating in the 18-49 demo compared to 6.3 in season six.
"The Walking Dead Encounter" app allows consumers to unlock walkers at store locations by scanning Mountain Dew packages and during Mountain Dew commercials during the season.
The partnership will also include "The Walking Dead" branding on more than 100 million Mountain Dew product packages.
The season eight premiere will be the 100th episode of "The Walking Dead." "The Walking Dead Encounter" app is available on both iOs and Android devices.
