Many X copycats have made news in the past few years, including Threads, Mastodon and now Bluesky. But none has replicated the cultural success of the platform formerly known as Twitter.
As users abandon X, Bluesky is growing quickly, with early adopters shaping it as an authentic community-driven space. It’s in the early stages of development, with more than 25 million active monthly users. The growth comes as X lost 20% of its users following Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform in 2022.
Bluesky, launched by Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey, is attempting to create a decentralized, user-controlled alternative to X. Unlike X, BlueSky emphasizes transparency and user autonomy in its algorithm. Dorsey left the BlueSky board in May 2024, however, concerned that the platform was repeating the same mistakes as Twitter and urged users to remain on X.
