Watch Alicia Silverstone in Rakuten's ‘Clueless’ Super Bowl ad

Anyone clueless about what the heck Rakuten is might not be after seeing the company’s Super Bowl spot, which features actress Alicia Silverstone reprising her role as Cher from the 1995 hit movie “Clueless.” Following the release of last week’s teaser, which had Silverstone again donning her iconic yellow plaid suit, Rakuten released the 30-second spot today, along with a longer 60-second version that will air on digital channels. In the ad, Silverstone tells a class full of high school students how Rakuten can help them gain money by giving cash back from shopping. The ad also stars actress Elisa Donovan returning as Cher’s nemesis and unfortunate debate opponent Amber. Ad Age events Sign up for events and awards Learn more here “I used to be pretty clueless about shopping—like, when I heard I could save by getting cash back with Rakuten, I was like as if!,” Silverstone says in the spot. “Then I was like, why didn't I do this sooner?” The ad includes looks from fashion designer Christian Siriano, with whom Rakuten has a partnership that includes a chance for shoppers to win specific looks. Siriano also has a cameo in the commercial. In a recent interview with Ad Age, Vicki McRae, senior VP of brand and creative at Rakuten, called the Cher character the “ultimate influencer,” and said she was perfect for helping to explain Rakuten’s value proposition, particularly during these financially fraught times. The new work follows Rakuten’s 2022 Super Bowl debut, which starred “Ted Lasso” actress Hannah Waddingham in a casino.
