Google revealed the theme of its national Super Bowl commercial, releasing a two-minute extended version featuring a father using its Gemini Live AI assistant to prepare for a job interview. A 60-second version of the commercial, titled “Dream Job,” will run in the second quarter of the game on Sunday. This is the fourth consecutive year Google has used the Super Bowl to promote Pixel phones and features on the device. This year’s creative takes on AI, giving Google a national stage to endear the public to Gemini, the AI chat assistant. In the extended version of the commercial, a father can be seen in conversation with Gemini, the large language model built into the phone. Gemini’s soft, human-like voice walks the father through likely interview questions, such as, “Tell me about the job that taught you most.” The question prompts the man to describe his job as a father, pulling him down memory lane. Follow-up questions from AI continue to remind the father of his family duties, setting up a montage of flashbacks of raising a daughter. The spot ends with a hug from her when she’s all grown up. The Super Bowl spot was conceived in-house by Google Creative Lab and directed by Henry-Alex Rubin from the production studio Smuggler. Over the past year, Google has faced challenges in telling its story about Gemini, a core part of its products. In the summer, it pulled a Gemini ad after consumers criticized it for depicting AI taking over a formative childhood activity. It’s a tricky task across the tech industry, in fact, where AI is integrating more and more into people’s lives and work. The companies have to explain how AI works and why consumers should adopt it, while not turning them off with fears about the future of automation. Other tech companies promoting AI features and products in the Super Bowl this year include Meta, which took a humorous approach in two 30-second commercials that star Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt. Meta is advertising its Ray-Ban glasses, which have an AI assistant built into them. Salesforce and GoDaddy also have AI services in their commercials. Google also said it has a more lighthearted online digital and social video campaign to accompany the Super Bowl commercial. Google also will run an online video spot called “Party Blitz,” a minute-long spot that shows how a non-football fan uses Gemini to impress his girlfriend’s family at its Super Bowl party. Meanwhile, last week, Google unveiled a regional push for the Big Game, with 50 local ads in 50 states. That campaign highlights how Google Workspace, the office software suite of apps, has helped small businesses with AI automation. Since last year, Google has been running a campaign called “Now We’re Talking,” which features Keke Palmer and also focuses on Gemini Live answering questions in an array of scenarios.
