Martin Scorsese makes his Super Bowl directing debut for Squarespace

Squarespace tapped Martin Scorsese to direct the brand’s 10th Super Bowl commercial, David Lee, Squarespace’s chief creative officer, told Ad Age. It marks Scorsese’s directing debut in a Super Bowl commercial. Check out the latest Super Bowl news here Lee declined to provide details on the commercial, such as who would star in the ad. For its 2023 Super Bowl ad (below), the website-building platform worked with actor Adam Driver on a commercial called “The Singularity,” and past ads have featured Zendaya, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and John Malkovich. Scorsese is no stranger to the Super Bowl, having starred in Coca-Cola’s 2020 Big Game ad for its energy drink. Working with Scorsese is “surreal,” Lee said in an email to Ad Age, referring to the Oscar-winning director simply known as “Marty.” “As someone fortunate to work with an incredible group of talent and directors in the past,” Lee said, “the ability to work with Marty to bring this year’s Super Bowl campaign to life is still surreal.” Squarespace did not say when during the game the 30-second ad will run. It will mark Squarespace’s fifth consecutive Super Bowl ad since first appearing in the game in 2014. Check out our Super Bowl archive here The 2024 Super Bowl is set to air on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas, for the first time, and it will broadcast on CBS. The network will also run a kids-focused broadcast, with alternative commercial opportunities, on Nickelodeon. The game will also be broadcast in Spanish on TelevisaUnivision. The ad from Scorsese will be produced by Squarespace’s in-house creative team. Scorsese will “help us bring our idea to life,” Lee said. Squarespace produced an extended teaser a couple of weeks before the 2023 game showing behind-the-scenes footage with Driver. “As with previous Super Bowl campaigns, we use this opportunity to create a myriad of content before, during and after the game to complement the in-game spot,” Lee said. “This includes teasers and expanded content, touching on both brand and product, that will appear on multiple touch points across our channels.”
