Martin Scorsese’s Squarespace Super Bowl commercial is about alien visitations—and website design, of course. On Wednesday, Squarespace released the 30-second spot, which is the first Super Bowl ad ever directed by Scorsese. It’s a story about UFOs appearing over world capitals and masses of people who are too busy scrolling on their phones to see the visitation. The visitors have to hack everyone’s devices to get their attention, after designing the homepage of a website to say, “hello down there.” That’s the tie-in to Squarespace, the web design company, which is running its 10th Super Bowl ad this year. The commercial is titled, fittingly, “Hello Down There.” The aliens resemble the classic “little green men” flying crafts inspired by 1950s UFO cinema. Scorsese makes a cameo at the end of the spot in the back of a black car, watching “Warning From Space,” the Japanese invasion film from 1956. Scorsese's movie is interrupted by the incoming alien website message to his tablet. In typical New Yorker fashion, he is more upset by traffic than interested in UFOs. While it’s Scorsese’s Super Bowl directorial debut, it’s the second Big Game ad in which he has appeared. Scorsese had a role in Coca-Cola’s 2020 Super Bowl commercial. Super Bowl commercials Tracking the latest brand and agency plans Enter here Aliens of New York Scorsese talked about his first foray into Super Bowl directing in a statement shared by Squarespace. “At my age, it’s a stretch finding a directorial debut,” Scorsese said in the announcement. “When Squarespace first approached me to create a spot, I thought this was my shot.” The commercial references the all-consuming nature of internet consumption, depicting crowds of people tethered to their phones obsessing over online media about alleged aliens. Meanwhile, actual aliens are flying around. “I'm a New Yorker,” Scorsese said in the announcement. “We’re busy, always on the move. Would we even notice extraterrestrials living among us?” Squarespace’s internal creative team helped develop the ad, which it said would run sometime during the first half of the game. On Monday, Squarespace released a four-minute teaser for the ad, starring Scorsese and his daughter Francesca Scorsese, who teaches him the basics of web design on the way to coming up with the idea for an alien-themed commercial. There is a 90-second version of the ad, too, also released on Wednesday. The commercial ends with a grand shot of a UFO hovering, and the tagline, “A Website Makes It Real.” There also is a website, HelloDownThere.com, with an about section that can tell visitors, well, about the visitors.
