Burger King's augmented reality ad helps you 'escape the clown' in McDonald's restaurants
Latest stunt from Germany coincides with the release of 'It: Chapter 2'
Editor's Pick
The release of "It: Chapter 2" featuring scary clown Pennywise has provided with Burger King with yet another opportunity to tease rival McDonald's over its association with clowns.
The chain started trolling McDonald's about clowns back when "It" came out in 2017, and now it's following up with another stunt in Germany, again engineered by local agency Grabarz & Partners and designed to drive registrations to the chain's MyBK app.
This time, BK sneakily placed an ad in a cinema-themed magazine that McDonald's publishes and is available in its restaurants. Visitors to McDonald's are geo-targeted by messages inviting them to scan the ad, and they are then led to an augmented reality "Escape the Clown" coupon for a one cent Whopper at the nearest Burger King if they register for the MyBK app. However, they have to hurry, as there's a countdown clock on the offer; Burger King provides them with directions though.
