Liquid Death is beginning 2024 much as it ended 2023—by aligning itself with existing IP to reach young people where they consume entertainment.

Following up its creation of a “Murder Mountain” map in Fortnite, the canned water brand this week unveils a partnership with the Netflix movie “Rebel Moon,” directed by Zack Snyder. “Rebel Moon,” a space fantasy film, was released on Netflix in December—but a highly anticipated director’s cut is coming in April.

The Liquid Death spot is set in the “Rebel Moon” world, but notably, it’s positioned as the drink of choice for the bad guys of the Imperium, not the rebels. It’s also styled as a stereotypical big-budget heritage beer ad, with the voiceover talking up the values of hard work—because you really will work up a thirst while beating up rebel farmers.

 

The spot was directed by Eli Snyder, Zack Snyder’s son, who was the second unit director on “Rebel Moon.” Liquid Death has collaborated with Zack Snyder before—rolling out a 30-minute spoof infomercial in 2021 connected to his Netflix zombie-heist film “Army of The Dead.”

“Creating a parody of a pandering ad campaign let us meld the world of ‘Rebel Moon’ with the distinct brand identity of Liquid Death,” Eli Snyder said in a statement. “Leveraging the real environments used in the film allowed us to maximize the irony of Imperium soldiers celebrating a ‘hard day’s work’ with an ice-cold can of Liquid Death.”
