As students get ready to go back to traditional campus life for the first time in over a year, experts fear there will be an uptick in sexual assault in what is considered to be a unique combination of first year students experiencing college for the first time and upperclassmen wanting to make up for lost time. Amidst this perfect storm is the startling reality that at least 1 in 3 sexaul assaults have a bystander present.
To combat this, It's On Us, the nation’s largest nonprofit program dedicated to college sexual assault prevention and survivor support, and independent creative agency Mekanism, created a Back to School campaign to build awareness of bystander intervention education tactics.
The Back to School campaign includes a video PSA narrated by Tony Hawk, as well as a real-world campaign extension. Mekanism worked with local It’s On Us campus chapters to distribute thousands of QR code stickers to be placed on party cups to campuses across the country. Scanning the QR codes leads users to The Bystander’s Guide To Stopping Sexual Assault, a resource that informs students about the different ways to intervene and stop sexual assault.
While college students are back to having fun again, this campaign from It's On Us and Mekanism empowers local campus chapters to encourage their peers to stop to take a look around and make sure everyone else is having a good time too.
The campaign is ongoing across digital and social platforms.
Hawk joins a long list of influential voices who have been featured in It’s On Us campaigns, including Connie Britton, Zoe Saldana, Alisha Boe, Elaine Welteroth, Justin Baldoni, Kerry Washington, Jon Hamm, Rose Byrne, Questlove, Justin Prentice, Joel McHale, and Adam Devine among others. Since it was founded in 2014, more than 450,000 students have taken the It's On Us pledge, committing to stop sexual assaults before they happen.
