On June 30, Oreo teased an electrifying new collaboration that had Pokémon fans abuzz.

The tweet has received just under 5,000 likes and over 1,500 retweets in the months since posting. “Pokémon flavored oreos???” violently guessed one user. “Man I can't wait to put an oreo made entirely of fire directly into my mouth” wrote another. And some tweeters even guessed the introduction of the fabled Oreon, a parody evolution of Evee, into the current game.

Today, the Mondelez-owned brand finally announced the partnership that has trainers whipping out their Pokéballs: a collection of 16 limited-edition cookies and Oreo’s first-ever rarity scheme.

The embossed designs feature beloved Pokémon including Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, but some cookies, like one featuring Mew, will be much rarer than others (perhaps it’s time to dust off your eBay account).

Pokemon x Oreo designs

An announcement video on Oreo’s social channels features Oreos, some open to reveal their white filling, arranged to create a pixelated movie of a trainer chasing down an elusive Pikachu. After finally trapping the Pokémon, it becomes a Pikachu Oreo, revealing the limited-edition packaging, a colorful collage of the franchise's characters. This isn't Oreo's first time using its cookies to animate a fantasy world. In 2019, the treat was used to replicate the "Game of Thrones" title sequence.

Collaboration packaging

For gamers in California, the reveal video can be seen in physical form on the Venice Beach Boardwalk from now until October 3rd. A massive 8x22 foot mural featuring over 8,000 3D replicas of the Pokemon Oreos (alas, no art licking here) forms a portrait of Pikachu and his signature “Pika Pika” call.

The cookies are currently available for preorder on the Oreo website and will hit store shelves on September 13.
