This Robot Colonel Sanders Will Be Taking Your KFC Orders for National Fried Chicken Day
Because Technology Pairs Well With Drumsticks
Jul 06, 2017
Today, KFC and Wieden & Kennedy unveiled their latest new Colonel Sanders -- a robot.
H.A.R.L.A.N.D. is an animatronic head who will be taking orders from customers at a KFC drive-thru, in honor of National Fried Chicken Day. Dubbed H.A.R.L.A.N.D. (Human Assisted Robotic Linguistic Animatronic Networked Device), the robot interacts directly with consumers and speaks in the Colonel's voice (or one that sounds like him).
"What better way to celebrate National Fried Chicken Day than by ordering KFC from the Colonel himself?" George Felix, KFC U.S. director of advertising said in a statement. "We suspect drive-thru designers are heralding the H.A.R.L.A.N.D. technology as the greatest industry advancement since the addition of two-way communication itself. Not only do we have a real person as our historic brand icon, but now we have the ability to bring that real person back as a real robot. The future is now."
Wieden & Kennedy's tech and engineering group The Lodge helped make H.A.R.L.A.N.D. a reality. For those who can't find the robot at their local KFC, the agency teamed with FunnyorDie on the above video showing H.A.R.L.A.N.D in action. Also, Robot Colonel happened to make an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night, which you can see here.
