There's been much talk lately about "The Witch" as an exemplary specimen of cinematic horror, but Massive Attack's latest music video, starring Oscar-nominated "Gone Girl" actress Rosamund Pike, is a terrifying story that might ring a little closer to home for those of us grappling with everyday techno-addictions.

Directed by Rattling Stick's Ringan Ledwidge for the track "Voodoo in My Blood," it opens with Pike in London, hurrying through the Joe Strummer subway underpass and peering left and right over her shoulder as if she's fleeing from some malevolent character.

She stops dead in her tracks when she's confronted by a flying metal ball, becoming entranced in its presence. She eyes it as prey would its predator, simultaneously transfixed and repelled. She then engages in an odd tango with the hovering object, flailing side to side, writhing up and down against the grimy walls and floor. It's hard to discern whether she controls it, or whether it controls her.

A particular gruesome moment occurs when the orb hovers toward to her face -- and then thrusts a tiny spear into her eyeball. The odd choreography is hypnotizing, while the story itself is likely to inflict a quiet, more psychological sense of terror on the viewer.

The theme, according to a release from Rattling Stick, is meant to "explore our uncertain relationship with technology."

The video shows the dark side of director Ledwidge, known for his skilled storytelling that ranges from the lighthearted to black humor to the heartwarmingly dramatic, for the likes of The Guardian, Axe, Nike, Sainsbury's and others.
