The Wikimedia Foundation is overhauling the Wikipedia page on Swedish history to give equal prominence to women, in a campaign encouraging all its volunteer writers to get on board with what it's dubbed "The Equal Edit."

Women make up just ten per cent of the mentions on the page, despite the host of important female figures in Sweden's history. So agency Wenderfalck, in collaboration with Wikimedia and the journal Historiskan, which aims to elevate historical women, devised the campaign. Historiskan has compiled a list of women who have played a major role in Sweden's development over the years, and Wikimedia Sweden's volunteers will then create articles about them to incorporate into the Swedish history page.

The project debuts in conjunction with the Wikimania conference, which will this year be held in Stockholm, Sweden starting August 14. One of Wikimedia's annual meetings, this year the conference has the theme "Stronger together: Wikimedia, free knowledge and the global goals."
