The New York Times has won the Entertainment Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for its virtual reality work "The Displaced."
The project was part of the New York Times' VR platform that earlier this week won the Grand Prix for Mobile.. The experience itself this time, produced out of VRSE.works in partnership with the Times, was awarded in the Entertainment category for being a real business-driver that helped "catapult the Gray Lady 100 years forward."
In November, the New York Times distributed 1 million Google Cardboard viewers to home-delivery subscribers, along with the paper -- the biggest ever project for Cardboard. The VR app was downloaded more times in its first few days than any previous New York Times app, exposing viewers to "The Displaced," a VR story about how war has displaced 30 millions children from their homes. It was directed by Imraan Ismail and Ben C. Solomon.
