Ford launches the electric Capri by ‘rewiring’ vintage Capri spots
W+K London’s ‘Mischief Rewired’ campaign in Europe captures the nameplate’s adventurous spirit of yore—with a modern twist
Editor's Pick
The Ford Capri’s transformation from a cult favorite decades ago to a modern electric vehicle today is captured in advertising that likewise veers from past to future—in eye-catching spots, with plenty of attitude, from Wieden+Kennedy London and director Fredrik Bond.
Three spots (collected in the video above) feature footage from old Capri commercials that then transition into new footage—“rewired with a bolt of modern mischief,” as the automaker puts it. The ads shows bolts of lightning, panthers and a group of skiers pursuing the vehicle.
The films are live throughout Europe in cinema, TV, video on demand and social, along with digital OOH (see below), OOH and print ads. The electric Capri goes on sale in early 2025 in Europe.
David Colman, creative director at W+K London, said the idea came about when the creative team, Georgina Brisby and Marcelo Duarte, discovered the archive of vintage Capri ads and suggested “rewiring” them.
“To relaunch the Capri as a new electric vehicle, we wanted to tap into its iconic past. From its role as the go-to car for stuntmen to its appearances alongside music legends and movie stars, the Capri was a symbol of excitement, individuality and style,” said Colman. “With Fredrik Bond directing, we dialed up the drama with lightning storms, a pack of panthers and even a James Bond-style ski chase. The challenge was where on earth we might be able to shoot three extremely different landscapes in one week. Luckily, Chile answered our production prayers.”
“When you say ‘The legend is back,’ you need to be all in,” said Pete Zillig, director of marketing for Ford in Europe. “What better way to do that than use some of those classic old Capri ads as a springboard into Capri’s electric future? Very proud of this brave work that stands out boldly in a sea of EV sameness.”
