Pharrell Williams, One Direction, Brian Wilson and Elton John are among the 27 music stars who appear in an epic film from the BBC, designed to promote its new BBC Music brand. Each famous face performs a line from the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows," reprising the style of the BBC's much-lauded 1997 recording of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," which united stars like Bono, David Bowie and Billy Joel. As with "Perfect Day," the choice of artists is designed to appeal across genres, with singers including Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters appearing alongside Stevie Wonder and Coldplay's Chris Martin. The song is performed to the accompaniment of the BBC Concert Orchestra and a youth choir, and ends with the tagline "For the love of music."
Created by agency Karmarama and production company Red Bee Media, the three-minute film marks the official launch of the BBC Music brand, which will involve new programming, partnerships and music initiatives. It broke last night, playing out across BBC TV channels and radio stations at 8 p.m. U.K. time. The recording of "God Only Knows" will also be released as a single in aid of the BBC's Children in Need fundraiser.
