In this TV commercial for Verizon out of Wieden & Kennedy Portland, we see members of an extended family hitting the road for the holidays. From the start, director John Hilcoate gently captures the stress -- the last-minute packing, the kids fighting in the back seat of the car, the traffic -- of the season. But then, of course, there's the joy of everyone arriving and coming together. Theodore Shapiro's song "I'm Right Here" sets the tone perfectly.
Even better, at the end of the spot there's a subtle surprise: We see a family member power down a smart phone. A voiceover (Catherine Keener) explains, "This time of year, it's good to have America's most reliable network -- from the moment you need it... until the moment you don't."
There you have it: Even Verizon thinks we should try to spend more time with our families and less time with our phones during the holidays -- and they actually just showed us how.
