You Will Be Stunned if You Look Up 'Woman' in the Dictionary
International Women's Day Campaign from BBDO New York Says It's 'Time to Redefine'
Editor's Pick
If you look up the word "woman" online or in dictionaries, you'll find various definitions that in 2018, sound like complete nonsense: among them, "prostitute," "a female paid to clean someone's house and carry out general domestic duties," "wife," "paramour," "mistress." (Yes, we checked.) So in time for International Women's Day, BBDO has debuted a campaign calling for an update to these antiquated and belittling descriptions with the "It's Time to Redefine" campaign.
The effort includes this PSA starring comedian Akilah Hughes calling B.S. on the outdated language, and a website with a Change.org petition to pull the online descriptions out of yesteryear.
UPDATE: The following day, Google's definition of "woman" changed and no longer carries the definition "a female paid to clean someone's house and carry out general domestic duties."
