Photographer captures gallery exhibit aboard Singapore Airlines

Meet Julia Nimke, a Berlin-based travel photographer traveling to her exhibit at the Leica Gallerie in Singapore. The twist: The exhibition has not yet been photographed. Nimke, will not only be traveling there via Singapore Airlines but will also shoot, edit, curate and create the entirety of the exhibit while up in the air—at 30,000 feet, to be exact. The 2-minute spot, directed by Jacky Lee from Smallshop, follows Nimke boarding her flight, being greeted by flight attendants, her Leica camera in hand, ready for creativity to strike and shoot the work for her exhibit. “I am a travel photographer, but I’ve always loved capturing the journey as much as the destination,” said Nimke. “It was an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience to work on a commercial flight and use the sky as my studio, working with the environment and light available as best as I could.” The campaign, “A Lens On World Class,” follows the Singapore Airlines global campaign “Welcome to World Class,” a look into one of the airline's flight attendants’ out-of-cabin experiences and how these diverse moments impact the crew's guarantee of “world class” customer service. “A Lens On World Class” blends moments of Nimke capturing a photograph with the actual photo on screen. There are photos of the flight crew, the wings of the aircraft through shadowy sepia hues, the empty cabins and even in-flight meals. The film also highlights the in-flight features and capabilities, such as unlimited Wi-Fi and a spacious cabin, which allowed Nimke enough space to work comfortably. “In the air, your emotions are so much more heightened,” says Nimke in the ad. The photographer has time not only to shoot on the plane, but she also sifts and edits the images to present later. Nimke also reflects on what world class means to her and calls it “a feeling.” “It’s finding a sense of home and enjoying a dash of the delightful unexpected.” This reflects the photographic journey artists undertake, seeking out hidden details often revealed when the timing, focus and shutter speed align perfectly. “Julia was a dream to work with” said Loo Yong Ping, deputy executive creative director at TBWA\Singapore, the creative agency that led the shoot, “her unique ability to capture natural, un-staged moments and use the available light and space at her disposal, and still create these beautiful images were really inspiring.” The photos were shown at a private exhibition at the Leica Gallery in the Raffles Hotel, Singapore. The film was released on Feb. 15.
