Cross-state billboards mark one-year anniversary of Dobbs ruling

Travelers entering Gary, Indiana; St. Louis; East St. Louis, Illinois; and Lansing, Illinois this weekend may spot billboards promoting accessible abortion care. The billboards include wording such as “If you can see this, you can access safe abortion care with Hey Jane” and “Safe abortion care that’s closer than the Arch.” The effort from virtual clinic Hey Jane comes one year after the Dobbs ruling overturned Roe v. Wade. The Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling was a landmark decision that eliminated the constitutional right to have an abortion in the U.S. The billboards are in and near Illinois, which has seen an influx of patients over the past year from neighboring states that have more restrictive abortion policies. “Our campaign is in the heart of abortion access in the Midwest, and it's driven by the astonishing 301% surge in patients seeking care in Illinois we saw in the year following the Dobbs decision,” said Hey Jane CEO Kiki Freedman, in a statement. “The impact that this decision had—and continues to have—on people seeking abortion care is undeniable, and we want to let people in bordering restrictive states know that they still have options when it comes to reproductive health care.” Hey Jane is among the providers that have witnessed a dramatic increase in patients in Illinois, reflecting the growing demand for accessible reproductive healthcare services in restrictive states. This June, Hey Jane announced that it was expanding to Massachusetts and Virginia. Dominican Republic-born designer Lizania Cruz designed the billboards.
