The top 5 creative campaigns to know about right now

The election and the beginning of the holiday season were top of mind for advertisers last week, but there was plenty of other creative work making waves. Among this week’s top 5, we do have one holiday campaign—an ingenious one, at that—but the shape of the other work was more unusual. Several gaming campaigns broke the mold, and our favorite work of the week cropped up unexpectedly on a beach. Check out the week’s full top 5 below. Tomcat: Not Recommended by Mice Agency: The Martin Agency Having a talking mouse front your campaign for mouse-killing bait seems a curious choice, but The Martin Agency pulls it off wonderfully in its first work for Tomcat. “Isle of Dogs” animator Tobias Fouracre brings his usual high craft to the stop-motion work, and the mouse character’s personality—“cute” but also “douchey,” according to a Martin creative director—is spot on. 4. Burger King: Burger to King Agency: Happiness Brussels, an FCB alliance Burger King fell in love with the soccer video game EA Sports FC back when it was called FIFA, with the “Stevenage Challenge” campaign. This work continues that legacy, offering gamers in Belgium a free Whopper if they share footage of themselves scoring a goal with players named Burger and King. Clever, simple and fun. 3. Clash of Clans: Hammerless Agency: David New York The Supercell mobile game is renowned for its elaborate experiments across media—most memorably, the “Clash from the Past” fake history of the game. “Hammerless” continues that tradition through a mock true-crime podcast digging into the mystery of who stole the Builder’s famous hammer from the game. The four-part series earned millions of listens—a nice example of playing around with the podcast format. Waitrose: Sweet Suspicion Agencies: Saatchi & Saatchi London Speaking of stuff getting stolen, this Waitrose holiday campaign had a similar mystery at the core: Who made off with the Waitrose Red Velvet Bauble Dessert at a holiday gathering? Part one of the campaign shows the suspects (all great British character actors) being interviewed in standard whodunit style. Part two, coming later this month, will solve the mystery. There’s a sameness to a lot of holiday ads; kudos to Saatchi for doing something fresh and new. 1. Ogilvy Sydney: The Spot Agency: Ogilvy Sydney Sometimes a great visual is all you need to get people talking, and this skin cancer awareness effort certainly had that—as a giant melanoma spot grew larger over a period of weeks on a beach during Australia’s Sculpture by the Sea festival. Ogilvy Sydney led the effort, assisted by Ogilvy Health, The Glue Society and The Beautiful and Useful Studio—with funding from Bristol Myers Squibb and La Roche-Posay.
