Nike has fun with the idea of a mysterious soccer "phantom' in a celebrity-filled spot promoting its new PhantomVSN boot.
Created by Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam and directed by blockbuster action pro Matthew Vaughn (director of "Layer Cake," the "Kingsman" films and "Kick-Ass"), the ad centers on the arrival--in a puff of black smoke--of a mysterious phantom-monster who tears it up on the soccer field. He/she becomes an urban legend as everyone whispers about what they can do--but who is it? Various players are suggested, including Kevin De Bruyne, Ronaldinho, Neymar, and female star Mal Pugh.
Actor Edward Holcroft, one of the "Kingsman" stars, plays the spot's soccer player protagonist, while Nigerian rap star WizKid, his posse Legendury Beatz and Tiwa Savage also appear. The music is a mashup between Genesis and Heavy Metal by Justice. Lights, smoke, CGI and even an octopus add up to an entertaining two-and-a-half minutes kicking off the new soccer season. Nike has been teasing the effort on social with the hashtag #AwakenThePhantom.
