For National Fry Day, McDonald's makes a Puerto Rican April Fool's joke come true
Brand alters its packaging to make a pocket for a 'lucky' wedge fry
Editor's Pick
For the upcoming National Fry Day on July 13, McDonald's is doing something very special for Puerto Ricans.
Agency TBWA San Juan has redesigned McDonald's fries packaging with a pocket added on the front in which to place a "napa," or "lucky extra" potato wedge fry.
The idea originated in an April Fool's joke by the brand earlier this year. A fake Facebook post touted the new packaging, based on the insight that sometimes people do find a "lucky" wedge fry in their fries, recieved thousands of comments from Puerto Ricans asking McDonalds to make it a reality.
"We took our followers' wishes and decided to make the Napapitas real for a day. This is the first time we have altered the packaging of our fries," says marketing manager Ricardo Hernández.
Take a look at the "making of" video to see all the hard work that went into redesigning the packs.
