The Super Bowl is often a roost for a whole flock of the host network’s promos, and Super Bowl LI was no exception: Among all the ads it sold for something like $5 million, Fox used the game’s commercial time to promote shows such as its hit “Empire.”
But it also did something unusual in allowing AMC to buy a sliver of time for this football-themed “Walking Dead” promo.
Then again, Super Bowl commercials for streaming video services morphed in 2017 from previous Hulu’s platform-wide ads to spots for specific shows on Netflix (“Stranger Things”) and Hulu (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), so there were actually three ads for off-network series in Super Bowl LI.
