VW's electric version of Spotify 'Wrapped' was a year in the making

Campaign from automaker's Canadian arm highlights its EV focus

Volkswagen Canada took advantage of "Spotify Wrapped" to highlight its focus on electric vehicles, in a campaign that was a year in the making.

As Spotify last week revealed its latest iteration of its year-end campaign "Wrapped," and listeners around the world shared their most played songs, artists and "auras," the auto brand revealed that it had been doing some listening of its own.

Throughout the year it had been creating a playlist that includes nothing but songs related to electricity, green energy and the environment, with tracks such as Drake’s “Charged Up,” Katy Perry’s “Electric,” AC/DC’s “High Voltage" and MGMT's "Electric Feel."

That resulted in the "#ElectricWrapped" playlist, which VW is now sharing on its Spotify channel and across other social channels, with cover art created by Montreal illustrator Oska that features a stylized version of the front of a Volkswagen.

The push was created by Volkswagen's cross-WPP agency Type 1, with creative handled via Taxi. The agency spotted the opportunity a year ago. 

“Volkswagen’s commitment to carbon net neutrality is more than just a statement,” said Alexis Bronstorph, co-chief creative officer, Taxi, in a statement. “We can bring this to life in really fun ways, like getting in on something we all love to share—'Spotify Wrapped.'”
